This briefing offers an opportunity to discuss concrete ideas to further strengthen prevention within the CAAC agenda, including how to fully leverage the existing tools available to prevent grave violations against children in situations of armed conflict. July 2023 will mark five years since the adoption of Resolution 2427 (2018), which highlights the need to incorporate child protection in efforts to prevent and end conflicts. The Secretary-General’s annual CAAC reporting has maintained high numbers of grave violations over time. In its 25th anniversary report, the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (OSRSG-CAAC), identified prevention as an area to be strengthened within the CAAC mandate. Despite progress, grave violations against children continue to be committed at an alarming scale and prevention efforts remain essential.
